why we fight

February 13th, 2006

Go see this movie, that’s what I suggest. Go see it, and then tell all your friends to see it. I watched it Saturday night, at the most excellent Cinema 21 down the street from me. It’s a powerful, heart-wrenching and maddening look at our hyper-militarist society, and how it’s come to be.

The movie begins with an excerpt from President Eisenhower’s famous farewell speech, in which he coined the term ‘military-industrial complex’, and foresaw it’s rise and domination of our society. It’s hard to imagine anybody in politics having the balls to deliver this kind of honestly today, and his prescience is frightening.

The movie also includes many other interesting and rage-inducing interviews. There’s the obligatory clips of Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and Rice, doing what they do in their usual soulless manner. Even worse though, are the longer interviews of the always boyish Bill Krystol, and the black-eyed war profiteer and child of Satan, Richard Pearle. If there was any shred of justice in the world, that scumbag would be put in a box for the rest of his miserable life. By the way, if you’d like to listen to Pearle getting thoroughly spanked in a 1988 debate with Noam Chomsky, check out these links: (part 1, part 2).

Some of my favorite parts of the movie are the interviews with Karen Kwiatkowski, a former Air Force Lt. Colonel who was part of the intelligence “gathering” group in the Pentagon during the buildup to the Iraq war. And, maybe most importantly, there are numerous images of dead and maimed Iraqi children, which is something our insipid media graciously spares us in their Superbowl coverage of this war.

But don’t take my word for it. Go spend a few bucks and see for yourself.
